New "Phosphate-Free" Lawn Fertilizer Now Available at Canadian Tire Stores Across the Country

(Toronto, ON - March 2007) - Canadian Tire announced today that a new phosphate-free lawn fertilizer will be available at Canadian Tire stores this spring. In addition to helping homeowners create a lush, green lawn, this new fertilizer does not contain phosphates - a contributor to algae growth in lakes and streams. As such it is safe for use near waterways.

"Canadian Tire continues to be focused on developing innovative new products that help our customers complete their gardening projects with ease and confidence," said Mike Magennis, line of business director, Canadian Tire. "Our market research indicated our customers were very interested in a fertilizer that effectively greens your lawn and is more environmentally friendly at the same time. We are excited to be able to offer a phosphate-free fertilizer as part of our line-up of lawn and garden products this spring."

David Watson, Fertilizer Category Director for Spectrum Brands Canada, said that "Researchers have found that by limiting phosphates, excessive algae growth can be prevented. Phosphates enter our waterways from several sources - household cleaners, industrial waste and soil erosion. But it can even come from small amounts of fertilizer accidentally applied to driveways and sidewalks. That's the reason why Canadian Tire has introduced new Phosphate-Free C-I-L Golfgreen Lawn Fertilizer."

In addition to being phosphate-free, C-I-L's new lawn fertilizer contains 31% nitrogen - a key element for nourishing turf plants and building a thick lawn to help shade out weeds. The new phosphate-free fertilizer is available this spring exclusively at Canadian Tire.

To help homeowners create a lush, green lawn, Canadian Tire has the following lawn care tips:

New seedlings require more phosphate than what is normally found in soil. C-I-L recommends only one application of a phosphate-enriched Golfgreen "Starter" fertilizer. Once the seedlings are established, homeowners can then switch over to Phosphate-Free Golfgreen.
Always use a fertilizer spreader; adjust it to a low setting and cover the area twice to ensure complete coverage. Never apply it by hand because it's impossible to obtain even coverage.
Although Phosphate-Free Golfgreen is a wise choice for homeowners with lawns adjacent to waterways, it is also intended for land-locked urban areas, where storm drainage can potentially end up in lakes and streams.
