Proposed revisions to the BBCA Bylaws - Updated with previous bylaws

Dear Bruce Beachers

This week you will be receiving your 2010 Yearbook. Included with the yearbook is a document which I would like you all to read pertaining to proposed revisions to the BBCA Bylaws. Your executive thought they should be updated since they were last done in 1988. We are posting them and the rationale for the changes on our Bruce Beach website and Ross is sending them along with this email.… continue reading »

Huron-Kinloss Community Septic Inspections (HK-CSI) Program Update

Huron Kinloss LogoHuron Kinloss LogoThe Township of Huron-Kinloss initiated the Huron-Kinloss Community Septic Inspections (HK-CSI) program in the spring of 2007. The goal of this ongoing program is to encourage regular maintenance of septic systems, through mandatory inspections. Left unmaintained, septic systems are a threat to public health and the environment. Regular maintenance, however, can ensure that systems work efficiently and safely, protecting the natural environment. Through the program, every property with a septic system (including outhouses/pit privies) will be inspected on a rotating basis over a six to seven year period.… continue reading »

Lake Huron e-news July 2010

Au Naturel

The wooded corridor that runs along the Lake Huron coastline is gradually disappearing. Every time a new cottage or home is built or expanded, more of our lakeshore woodlands are lost. Every decision to clear vegetation to have an unobstructed view of the lake impacts the natural corridor. It's not just the trees that are removed, but often the shrubs and native groundcovers are lost as well. It’s a gradual process, but it amounts to “death by a thousand cuts”, as the process of vegetation removal gets repeated over and over again. Natural ecosystems, whether it's a woodland, wetland or dune grassland become fragmented from intact systems to smaller, less robust, units prone to disease, erosion or infestation by invasive species.… continue reading »

Tour of Pine River Watershed projects a real eye-opener

By Liz Dadson

Brian MacKay (R) talks to the group about the improvements made on his property

The group checks out a nitrate filter in the Clark Creek municipal drain

Wayne Lawrence (R), plant supervisor, talks to the group in the viewing area at the Pine River Cheese Factory

Gord Cale (L), Bern Portz and Lorne Underwood check out the mouth of the Pine River
It was a whirlwind, 15-stop tour, Friday morning (June 18), as about 50 people boarded a school bus to view, first-hand, the work of the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN).

The event was an appreciation day for the landowners, sponsors, Conservation Authorities, provincial and federal ministries, beach associations, the township, and numerous organizations that have helped out with projects to provide clean water and a healthy eco-system within the Pine River Watershed. …continue reading »

Tree Cutting along Bruce Beach Road

On the 2nd of April, after hearing chain saws and a chipper being operated behind our cottage for several hours (111-2, Bruce Beach Road), Dave Ceolin, my son Vincent and I attended at 738 Lake Range Drive. We spoke with the owner, who allowed us to attend in their back yard, where we observed that clear cutting had occurred approx. 1/3rd of the way down the hill towards the Bruce Beach Road. The owner indicated that he had a Ministry of Environment permit to cut the trees on the hill and was cutting them to 'make his back yard bigger'. When asked to see the permit he admitted that he didn't have one. We indicated that we understood that a bylaw had been enacted by the municipality, preventing clear cutting and encouraged the owner to stop. Returning to Dave Ceolin's cottage, we checked the internet and located 'Bruce County Forest Conservation ByLaw, 2004, By Law NO. 4071. With this information, we called the OPP who attended and instructed the owner to cease cutting any more trees.… continue reading »

Date:
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

All Bruce Beachers who happen to be up at the lake this Tuesday June 15th are invited to the official opening of "Gone to the Beach: A History of Vacationing in Kincardine and Area" in the Walker House from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. There is a general tourism display downstairs and a Bruce Beach room upstairs. Refreshments will be served.

Paddy Walker House Tour

It's a miserable, rainy day here at Bruce Beach. We have cottage guest, Liz and Scott Russell, with whom we intended to play golf to-day but, I don't ski in the rain which makes it quite obvious that I wouldn't golf in the rain, either. In an effort to kill some time before the cocktail hour we ended up at the Paddy Walker House.… continue reading »

Golf Club Work Bee

Date:
Saturday, June 12, 2010 - 9:00am

This Saturday June 12th is the Golf Club Work Bee. The purpose of the event is to get the club as playable as possible using all of the the volunteer labour that shows up. Naturally, the more the merrier so if you play the occasional round, or would just like to contribute to the Bruce Beach life style, please come out and help. We're normally done in about two hours.

This year there is no need to work on the Clubhouse as the renovation is in progress and on schedule. The flags and tee blocks are out so all effort can be directed to the greens, sand traps and general clean up.

In a brilliant display of leadership I won't be there (high school reunion) but Bruce Eaton will make sure everyone has something to do.

It's a lot of fun - really! If you can make it, please assemble at the first tee around 9:00 am.
