As the province grapples with rising cases of COVID, the Medical Officer of Health for Huron and Perth says it’s a real possibility the region could move to a higher category under the province’s colour code system.
Huron and Perth are under Yellow – Protect, but Dr. Miriam Klassen says the region could could move to Orange – Restrict because of the rise in cases.
“I think when you look at factors like what’s happening in neighbouring regions like Waterloo, in Southwestern and when you look at the number of people that are in hospital right now, I think that those are all factors that also speak in favour of moving to orange,” said Dr. Klassen.
While acknowledging most of the cases are related to Cedarcroft retirement home in Stratford and an outbreak in Perth East, Dr. Klassen points out that can escalate very quickly into the rest of the community.
“At the same time, I am reaching out to municipal partners and leaders to listen to their feed back and all of that is discussed, but ultimately it is the Chief Medical Officer of Health who makes the recommendation to cabinet and then cabinet, who makes the final decision,” added Dr. Klassen.
