Huron County’s Local Immigration Partnership Manager says a new program at the Alice Munro Library in Wingham has become very popular with newcomers to the town.
Mark Nonkes says the Welcome to Wingham program started in September, and it’s a great way for newcomers to the area to get to know their neighbours.
“This is particularly for immigrants, but also new residents who moved to Wingham and area during COVID or a little bit before. But it’s a way to get to know who’s in the community. There’s food and lots of chat and a great way to network and connect,” Nonkes said.
Nonkes says they held their first event last September, and that went over very well, attracting over twenty people to that one. He says they took a bit of a break after that and held the next event in January.
“We’re getting about a couple of dozen people. We had a good turnout for our September event and then January it was a snowy night so we had about a dozen people there, but what’s really great is we’re seeing people from all parts of the world who have moved to Wingham and area,” added Nonkes.
The next event is this month, on February 23 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Alice Munro Library on Edward Street in Wingham. More information about the event can be found on the Huron County Library web site under Events.
