2023 "FREE SEEDLING
GIVE-AWAY PROGRAM"

The last weekend in April, over 7000 seedlings were handed out during our annual "FREE Seedling Give-Away Program." The selection of seedlings for this year included white cedar, white spruce, Norway spruce, black walnut, tamarack, white pine, red and sugar maple, red and bur oak, highbush cranberry and red osier dogwood. The program was created in 2014 and is a very popular community outreach program.

PRWIN directors and volunteers sorted and packaged 120 personal orders. PRWIN set up a seedling pick location with a local landowner for the drive by/pick up. Participants from Huron Kinloss and our surrounding area placed their orders in the fall. A few of the personal orders supported the Kincardine Naturalization Project - Savage Park, Bright Beginnings Child Care, a classroom at KTTPS and a planting group from Goderich to plant seedlings at George G. Newton Nature Reserve.

Donations and sponsorship from B. M. Ross & Associates, Baywood Interiors Network,Corteva Agriscience, Enbridge, Greenfield Global, Howick Mutual Insurance, K2 Wind, Meridian, NWMO, Ontario Power Generation, Society of United Professionals. Also, a community grant from Community Foundation Grey Bruce supported our annual seedling program.

4-H CONSERVATION TREE PLANTING DAY

Saturday, May 6th, proved to be a beautiful day for PRWIN’s Annual 4-H Conservation Club Tree Planting Day. The Ripley 4-H Conservation Club, Kinetic Knights, Kincardine 2nd Scouts, Sawjan Samanvay Sanatan Centre and PRWIN families worked together planting seedlings at Pine River Food.
Ben Lobb, MP of Huron-Bruce, joined us to plant seedlings along the river flats. Also, representatives from Enbridge and the Society of United Professionals volunteered at our planting site.
The volunteers hand planted over 2000 white cedars with a mix of Norway spruce and hardwoods.
To wrap up the morning planting session, Lucknow Co-op and Mercato Pizzeria provided pizza for our hard-working crew!
Thank you to our tireless and energetic directors and volunteers!

PRWIN SEEDLING ORDERS

Jen Middelkamp (Ripley 4-H Conservation Club Leader), Gayle Jamieson (PRWIN Volunteer), Angela Thompkins (PRWIN Director), Murray Jamieson (PRWIN Vice-Chairperson), Jim and Christine Roberts (PRWIN Volunteers) David Grant (PRWIN Chairperson) and Bill Smith (PRWIN Director).

Thank you to our directors and volunteers for their time and efforts to help sort the custom personal seedling orders for our "FREE Seedling Give-Away Program."

2023 PLANTING PROJECTS

This spring, project seedlings were planted to create windbreaks and to reforest landowners properties in our community. Our project seedlings included a variety white spruce, white pine, white cedar, Norway spruce, red maple and black walnut. The seedlings will reduce wind speed in open fields, increase forest coverage, create shade and wildlife habitat and protect soil and water resources.

PRWIN Directors David Grant, Murray Jamieson, Bill Smith, Conner Dixon, Bernd Portz, Angela Thompkins, Project Co-ordinator Lisa Holland and PRWIN volunteers Jim Roberts and Jen Middelkamp had a great stretch of weather to complete our project sites.

"From little seeds grow mightly trees!"

PLANTING IN ASHFIELD

Last week, we added seedlings to a reforestation project that PRWIN developed a few years ago. The additional seedings of white spruce and a mix of hard woods are now planted at the ACW Township site.
Thank you to our PRWIN Directors Murray Jamieson, Bill Smith, Murray Yungblut, Project Co-ordinator Lisa Holland and PRWIN volunteers Jim Roberts and Jen Middelkamp for their time to reforest the planting site. Special thank you to Maitlland Valley Conservation Authority for the seedlings.

Give us a call if you feel your land could benefit with our planting programs. 519-395-5538

ENJOY NATURE AT THE
MCLARTY CENTRE

The McLarty Environmental Study Area is located on Bruce Road 6/Side Road 20 in Huron Kinloss. It is open to the public to enjoy the great outdoors!
In 2013, Dr. McLarty and family donated fourteen acres of Pine River Flats from their farm to the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network for the creation of the McLarty Environmental Study Area. This area is designed for our community to learn about the Pine River; wetland creation; and the education of the local wildlife and plants that this area supports. It remains the desire of the McLarty’s to preserve this piece of the river flats for generations to come.
PRWIN has installed a trail system, created two wetland ponds, planted memorial trees, an osprey nest and planted over a thousand tree seedlings. Community groups have enjoyed outdoor classroom experiences at the McLarty location. This summer, the Ripley Horticultural Society - For Our Youth will be stopping by to enjoy nature along the river flats. Local youth and groups are welcome to experience this opportunity!

If you would like to explore the McLarty Centre, email pineriverwin@yahoo.ca

Our committee greatly appreciates community sponsorship and grant funding opportunities to continue our annual seedling program and tree projects in the Pine River Watershed.
Funding allows PRWIN to keep our tree programs alive and to support the goals of PRWIN and our Lake Huron shoreline.

LAKE HURON COASTAL CENTRE CONFERENCE

On May 5th, PRWIN Chairperson David Grant and PRWIN Director Angela Thompkins attend the Lake Huron Coastal Centre Conference "Is the Coast Clear" in Grand Bend. The conference provided a forum for environmental professionals, government officials, and the public to learn about issues affecting Lake Huron’s coastal environment. Experts from the Great Lakes region had the opportunity to discuss coastal topics, local actions, and solutions to environmental challenges.
Also, the conference was an opportunity to
celebrate the Lake Huron Coastal Centre's 25th anniversary!
