In December, PRWIN collected personal seedling orders for our PRWIN 2023 Spring Seedling Program. Seedlings species are the following: white pine, white spruce, Norway spruce, white cedar, red oak, black walnut, high bush cranberry, red dogwood as well as a limited supply of tamarack, bur oak, red and sugar maple. This year, we have 110 personal seedling orders. Personal seedling orders are sourced from Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

All recipients of the program will be responsible for picking up and planting the seedlings. If seedlings are not picked up, they will be given to a participant on the waiting list. All participants of our program will be given notice by email or phone, informing them of our seedling pickup date and location.

COA 2022 BERM PROJECT

This fall, two water and sediment control basins also know as "berms" were built up to control runoff on farmland in Huron Kinloss. Our contractor redesigned the existing berms this fall. The "berms" structure reduces water and sediment run-off into local watercourses and reduces erosion. The berm will allow any sediment to settle out and will allow for infiltration through the soils. The waterway between the berms was reshaped and seeded. These berms were made possible by COA funding, a grant from Environment Canada.

If you are a landowner you could benefit from an in ground project. Connect with us! 519-395-5538 or email pineriverwin@yahoo.ca

FALL PLANTING WITH MVCA

Over 200 trees and shrubs were planted this fall at a project site near Holyrood. These trees and shrubs will increase forest coverage, create shade and wildlife habitat, protect soil and water resources. Thank you to Maitland Valley Conservation Authority for the opportunity to plant seedlings in our watershed. Also, thank you to our directors and community volunteers for all their hard work.

The McLarty Environmental Study Area is located on Bruce Road 6/Side Road 20 in Huron Kinloss. It is open to the public to enjoy the great outdoors!

This area is designed for our community to learn about the Pine River; wetland creation and the education of the local wildlife and plants that this area supports. PRWIN has installed a trail system throughout the area, created two wetland ponds, planted memorial trees, an osprey nest and planted over a thousand tree seedlings.

Community groups have enjoyed outdoor classroom experiences at the McLarty location. The 4H Conservation Club and the Ripley Horticultural Society - For Our Youth have stopped by to enjoy nature along the river flats.

Local youth groups, clubs and day camps are welcome to experience this opportunity!

RIPLEY 4-H CLUB AWARDS NIGHT

David Grant, PRWIN Chairperson, attended the Bruce County 4-H Club Achievement Night. PRWIN was recognized as a sponsor of the Ripley 4-H Conservation Club and the Ripley 4-H Sheep Club. PRWIN supported three of Ripley 4-H Club planting and conservation projects this past year, which is how they track their activities and success.
Our committee would like to thank the Ripley 4-H Clubs for all their hard work and assistance in 2022.
It was a great year!

MCLARTY CENTRE SUPPORTS MONARCH POPULATIONS

This fall, the monarch butterfly was added to the list of threatened species and categorized as endangered for the first time by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature — two steps from being extinct in the wild. Parks Canada suggested planting native species that flower into the fall to provide nectar for migrating butterflies and milkweed for monarch caterpillars. PRWIN offered milkweed seeds for our community to plant to support monarch populations.
Also, PRWIN planted seeds at the McLarty Centre to create and restore healthy habitat to support monarchs.

PRWIN DIRECTOR CATHY FARRELL

Retirement of Cathy Farrell from the Board of Directors

Last fall, Cathy Farrell retired from the position of Secretary and Member of the Board for Pine River Watershed initiative Network (PRWIN)

Cathy is a founding member of PRWIN and I am sure some if not all of the initial meetings during the establishment of PRWIN started around her kitchen table. Cathy has been very dedicated and hard working ensuring the success of PRWIN. She has always provided sound advice and is a wealth of knowledge on the community and past projects. As a new Board Member, she was very welcoming and gracious to me, always a friendly smile and positive suggestions at meetings.  During our spring seedling planting events, Cathy always jumped in to organize the hot cider and sandwiches to keep the tree planters going until the job was completed.  She has been of great assistance to me since I joined the Board in 2012.

Thank you very much Cathy, for all your time and energy over the years.  It has been a real pleasure to get to know you and Don and your family. You know you will always be welcome at any of our PRWIN events, so please join us for a hot cider during the tree planting season next spring.

MEMORIAL TREE IN MEMORY OF JACK CAMPBELL

In October, PRWIN planted a tree in memory of Jack Campbell.
Jack was a member with our organization for over 20 years and was one of the co–founders of PRWIN when it was started in 2000 by a group of citizens concerned about the water quality in the Pine River.
PRWIN was fortunate to receive donations in memory of Jack Campbell, who brought many volunteer hours to our organization and had great leadership and dedication to our watershed.
To honour Jack’s life and to express our condolences to his family, PRWIN planted a tree at the McLarty Education Centre.

PRWIN would like to welcome Lisa Holland as our Project
Co-ordinator Contractor.

Lisa Holland is a resident of the Teeswater area. Lisa will bring valuable knowledge and experience regarding agriculture and the environment to our organization. Lisa has a Masters of Science in Soil Fertility and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Guelph.

Lisa's dedication to our vision of “Clean water and a healthy ecosystem within the Pine River watershed“ will be a welcoming addition to our organization.

We would like to thank our community members for their donations in 2022 to support our non-profit organization. Our committee is grateful for their contributioms to support our in-ground projects and programs, as well as our mission of "Clean water and a healthy ecosystem within the Pine River Watershed."
We are a not-for-profit charity, and always welcome assistance from any business, association, or member of our community
